The unthinkable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut has shaken us all. At Children’s Health Council we know families in our community are trying to quell the anxiety and fear that may be affecting your children in the aftermath of the shootings on December 14.
CHC’s pledge to our community is to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and well being of all children. We hope families will find our article Helping Children Deal with Trauma written by CHC clinicians, to be a helpful resource.
We would also like to share a few more articles you may find of help during this difficult time:
- Helping Children After a Disaster, The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Comforting Children in a Disaster, SesameStreet.org
- Talking to Children About the School Shooting, Huffington Post

Thank you for writing this guide.
This tragedy seems to have taken a turn in its explanation since the press has brought spectrum diagnoses to the table. Is there someone who might help with
A) putting that in perspective for families that spend everything they have (time, money and heart) to improve the outcome for their children with these challenges
and 2) to help communicate this to others.

Hi Danielle,
We are so glad you found the guide useful. I will email you so we can exchange ideas on how we can add perspective to this issue and reach our larger community with this important information.
