This course will present the gender affirmative model for treating gender-nonconforming and transgender children/youth and their families based on the premise that variations in gender equal health, not pathology and the role of mental health is to 1) explore gender and its meanings to the child; 2) affirm an authentic gender self; 3) build gender resilience; 4) facilitate family and social supports. Course segments will include: Re-learning Gender; Comparison of the gender affirmative model with other models of treatment; Mental health practices in the gender affirmative model; Role of mental health professionals in medical interventions, specifically puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones; Gender affirmative interdisciplinary model; Case examples. This course is appropriate for all levels of clinician and will be presented by Diane Ehrensaft, PhD.
