The Role of Media During the Pandemic: Connection, Creativity, and Learning for Tweens and Teens

The latest report from the Common Sense Census, The Role of Media During the Pandemic: Connection, Creativity, and Learning for Tweens and Teens, explores how tweens and teens have strategically been using entertainment media to improve their mental health, stay social and creative, and continue learning, even outside of remote school.
Here is some of what tweens and teens told Common Sense Media:

  • Media for mental health: 84% used entertainment media during the pandemic to boost their moods, and 91% simply to have fun.
  • Media for connection: 83% used media to stay connected with friends and family, 70% played video games with others to connect, 56% hung out with others on video chat, and 40% watched TV shows or movies together online during the pandemic.
  • Media for learning and creativity: 78% used digital devices to learn something they were personally interested in during the pandemic, and 53% pursued creative interests, including taking and editing photos, making videos, writing, or composing music.

Looking ahead to 2022, tweens and teens are ready to get back to normal. Nearly half of those surveyed want to spend time with friends in person more often than they did before the pandemic, and in fact, 41% believe they spent too much time with media during the pandemic.
