Multisite investigations have reported that over 5 million children have long COVID, and that 10-20% of children who test positive with COVID-19 experience this chronic condition. Common features reported among youth with long COVID include headaches, orthostatic intolerance, sleep disturbance, and notably, changes in cognition, mental health and daily functioning. Accordingly, it is essential to consider nuanced approaches to assess physical symptoms, cognition and emotion/behavior functioning in affected youth across developmental stages.
This talk provides an overview of the neurocognitive, mood, and behavioral profiles of a pediatric cohort with long COVID, evaluated at one of the first pediatric post-COVID rehabilitation clinic in the United States. Behavioral health interventions and neurocognitive assessment approaches will be discussed within the context of common long-COVID physical symptoms (headache/pain, sleep, fatigue, orthostatic intolerance).
